OUT ON A LIMB What people seem to have in mind when talking about maturity and growing up is they expect you to toe the line, what they like to call »be real«. Reality however is nothing but a mental concept the majority has agreed upon, telling them how to deal with things, with people, and of course with themselves. A concept for people who need some ready-made answers so they won’t have to bother with finding out for themselves. That would mean taking risks, moving out on a limb all by themselves, and taking responsibility for whatever they’re doing. They prefer doing what everybody else is doing so they can always refer to whatever the agreement’s supposed to be, delegating responsibility for what they’re doing by saying I’ve been told this, I’ve been taught that. So who’s mature?
In any kind of representation of what we call reality, whether it’s pictures, numbers, movies, stories or whatever, the most common pretense is the claim to be authentic. Nobody bothering to wonder who has authorized whom to decide on what‘s real and what isn’t. Seems to be decided simply on account of the number of people who agree on whatever the current definition is, in blissful ignorance of past experiences with majority’s ignorance …
The majority always going by the laws of gravity which is why they’re stuck in the muck of their daily routines, complaining about how boring things are yet never trying anything different like moving on out on their own …
Any kind of representation of whatever always is but an abstraction of an idea of something else, of something not present, something out of reach. What really matters is the gap between what we call reality and its representations. The less detailed the information we’re dealing with the stronger the impact of the image or whatever kind of representation we’re being confronted with …
We and our minds live and breathe in the gap in between. The wider the gap the deeper we can breathe, the larger the horizon for our mind and imagination to spread their wings. So let’s not be real, let’s move on out and spread our wings …
